Deep Space Nine: Grand Nagus Zek

The best Grand Nagus costume has to be this one. Grand Nagus Zek was loved, envied, and feared by his fellow Ferengi with good reason: He was both genius and crazy. Nowhere is that more apparent than in his wardrobe. Some of the fabrics used seem like an absolutely crazy choice, but they come together with pure genius and this Ferengi costume is a prime example.

In order of appearance, this is Zek's second Ferengi outfit. It is first seen in DS9 season 2 'Rules Of Acquisition' where Zek sends Quark on a impossible errand that is ultimately successful...for Zek.

We next see the costume in the season 3 episode 'Prophet Motive' where the Prophets change Zek's feelings about greed and profit...and not entirely for the better in a Ferengi's eyes.

Season 5's 'Ferengi Love Songs' showcases Zek's vulnerable side and expands upon Ferengi society. It also showcases many of his outfits, including this one.

The final time this Grand Nagus costume is seen in the season 6 episode 'Profit And Lace'. Brunt nearly manages to replace Zek as the Grand Nagus, but ultimately fails again.

This costume was originally sold off in pieces and it is still not entirely complete, but it is close. I already owned the jumpsuit and shoes prior to the coat and vest, but wasn't aware they belonged together. The acquisition of the vest and coat took a great deal of patience as the prior owner was very fond of it and it took some time to come to an arrangement that worked for both of us. Once I had the top half and examined various screencaps, I recognized that I owned the bottom half and was able to reunite them. The reddish undershirt has not been located to date.

This is the best Grand Nagus costume, and I am so very thrilled to own it (thanks Steve, it's in good hands).

Deep Space Nine and Voyager: Turot and Nunk

This Ferengi costume was used several times in two different star trek series. The first was in the Deep Space Nine episode 'The Nagus' as the Ferengi businessman Turot. His role in the episode is minimal to be sure, but his amazing costume, along with the other Ferengi in the episode, helps to establish the direction of Ferengi fashion for the rest of the Star Trek franchise.

In the episode, he is noted for being unwilling to sit next to a rival Ferengi named Hoex, due to Hoex buying out Turot's controlling interest in the cargo ports on Volchek Prime.

It's next appearance is in season 2's 'The Alternate'. This unnamed Ferengi is seen browsing the remains of the Ferengi 'Plegg'. When he hears Quark's price, he just moves along.

This costume is seen again in the season 6 Deep Space Nine episode

'Change Of Heart' among a number of Ferengi playing Tongo with Quark.

In the season seven Star Trek Voyager episode 'Inside Man', this ferengi costume makes it's return as the character DaiMon 'Nunk'. In the episode, Nunk hatches a plan to kidnap Seven of Nine with the intent to steal her nanoprobes and sell them for a profit. When Barclay figures out that the crew of USS Voyager will be killed in the process, he tricks Nunk and is able to foil the deadly plan.

Turot was played by an unknown actor, and even though there are tags in the costume's components, none indicate the actor that portrayed him. However, we do know that Michael Rivkin portrayed Nunk and there are tags in all of the pieces verifying this.

This costume seemed deceptively plain some years ago before I owned it, but I tell you now I was mistaken. Hoex may not have wanted to sit next to this ferengi, but now it is one of the more elaborate Ferengi costumes sitting in my collection.

Deep Space Nine: Grand Nagus Zek

Meet Grand Nagus 'Zek' of Ferenginar. He is the head of all things financial for the Ferengi, and this is his Ferengi costume. We first meet him in the Deep Space Nine episode 'The Nagus'. Here we learn his role in Ferengi society and how he is both admired and feared. In the episode, Zek is about to retire and is about to choose his replacement. Zek's own son Krax accompanies him to Deep Space Nine where Zek is to announce his choice at a conference among other important Ferengi. Unexpectedly, Zek picks Quark to be his successor in an attempt to uncover a plot against him, and see if Krax is ready to take over as the true successor.

Zek appears in a total of seven episodes of Deep Space Nine, such as 'Prophet Motive' and 'The Emperor's New Cloak'. His mix of capitalism and chauvinism made him a fantastic character and fan favorite.

Wallace Shawn portrayed Zek in all seven appearances and this is his first Grand Nagus costume used in the show. This particular Ferengi costume makes three more appearances in the Deep Space Nine episodes 'Rules Of Acquisition' 'Prophet Motive' and 'Ferengi Love Songs'

Deep Space Nine: Civilian Waiter

This Ferengi costume was worn by an unnamed character in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Bar Association'. He is among other Ferengi employed by Quark. To improve their working conditions, they form The Guild of Restaurant and Casino Employees, and strike against him when he cut their pay. Add in Brunt and a couple of Naussicans, and trouble ensues. Ultimately, Quark relents, but still manages to save face. Veteran Ferengi actor Ken Ziff wore this costume in the only episode it was seen in. It is complete with all 5 pieces and looks equally as good in person.

Oh, the benefits of owning such great Star Trek costumes.

This post isn't entirely related to Ferengi costumes, but I had to post this picture of Max Grodenchik, Myself, and Armin Shimmerman. I have chatted with each of them at various conventions and asked them if they would wear their Ferengi costume coat in a pic with me. Each had no problem at all with it, so when I caught up to them at a recent convention, I came prepared...and they honored my request.

I have met these two many times over the years and they have got to be the nicest, kindest, and most generous people you could meet. If you see them at a convention, be sure to thank them for what they did for Star Trek and by extention, for us.

Deep Space Nine: Pel

Pel was the first of only two Ferengi females to be seen in the entire Star Trek universe. Introduced in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Rules Of Acquisition', she left a lasting impression among fans.

In the episode, she disguised herself as a Ferengi male, complete with larger ears, to prove that Ferengi women had the intelligence and ability to earn profit. When her insightful counsel drives a wedge between Rom and his brother Quark, Rom does some snooping and discovers her secret. When her true gender is exposed, trouble ensues and old stereotypes are questioned.
Pel was portrayed by Helene Udy, and I am lucky to have her Ferengi shirt. Since her coat fit so poorly, it seems to me that wardrobe gave her whatever Ferengi waiter costume fit her best. However, being female, her costume top was unique in several ways. The most obvious is that the shirt snaps closed from the front, while all other Ferengi Waiters(and most Ferengi costumes) zip up the back. Also in a rare break from the norm, her costume top does not have her name on the inside tag. This is particularly odd as the shirt was custom made for her, and screencaps clearly confirm this is her shirt.
Interesting footnote: Two different shirts were made for Pel and both were seen in the episode, sometimes in the very same scene!

My luck has paid off more times than I can count, and here is a great example. During the 2011 Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, I was very fortunate to meet Helene Udy at her first ever Star Trek Convention. You likely remember her from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman as the lovely Myra, but her role as Pel was no less remarkable. She is such a treat, and I have to tell you, she was as kind and sweet as she is beautiful. Thanks Helene...as I know you will see this.

Deep Space Nine: Rom

Ya know, for being in only 31 episodes, Rom had a nice wardrobe. This costume was first seen in the DS9 episode 'Family Business' where Rom's mother Ishka makes trouble for the family by earning profit, wearing clothes, and not admitting these were mistakes. This Ferengi costume was also seen in 'Take Me Out To The Holosuite' where Rom manages to come through in the clutch.

This fine piece of Ferengi wardrobe was used by Rom in only 4 episodes like 'Bar Association' and 'Little Green Men' as shown above.

This particular Rom costume is great as it is complete with shoes and headwrap. All of the internal tags have 'Max' or 'Max G'. There are no other tags indicating any reuse of components. There was a stunt version of this costume made, but I can't see why as every time Rom is seen in this outfit, there are no action sequences requiring a double. Stranger things have been done...!

During the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention in 2009, I was given an opportunity to have a few pictures taken with Max Grodenchik. He came out from behind his autograph table and posed for pictures with me. He is obviously a professional as he was concerned about lighting and poses for the best picture. I am told that his this way with all his fans. What a cool guy!

Deep Space Nine: Rom

This is a great Rom costume. It was first presented in the season 4 episode 'The House Of Quark' and was used in a total of 15 episodes, including 'A Call To Arms' and 'Sacrifice Of Angels'.
In fact, the final time we see Rom is in the episode 'Dogs Of War' where he becomes the Grand Nagus and is wearing this outfit.

This Particular ferengi costume was sought after by me for a couple of years before the owner agreed to part with it. I am very lucky in that this costume is complete with all components including the original boots. All of the components say 'Max G' and have no other names indicating reuse. Two jackets were made for this Rom costume, and both say 'Max G'. After some use, one of the jackets was demoted to 'stunt' status as there is an additional marking on the tag in red pen added at a later date noting 'stunt'.

During the Phoenix Star Trek Convention in 2011, I brought with me one of Max's Rom jackets. He held it up and allowed a few fans to take pics of him with it. Great stuff to be sure!

Deep Space Nine: Rom

This costume was worn by Rom in just 6 episodes. It made it's first appearance in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Little Green Men' ( as seen below),and lastly in 'Under A Paper Moon', and is one of his best looking Ferengi costumes.

Proving some versatility, Rom wore just the jumpsuit and shirt during baseball training in 'Take Me Out To The Holosuite'.

This particular Ferengi costume is incomplete. It is missing the coat, boots, and headwrap. It appears two of this costume was made, as a complete one had been sold at the 2006 Christie's Star Trek auction. Unfortunately, the fate of the costume is as of yet unknown. For me, this presents a small mystery as all of my costume components say Max Groedenchik. What did the buyer actually get? Is it a hero coat with the rest being stunt? We may never know, but one day I will find out.

The Next Generation: Season One

This Ferengi costume is from Star Trek: The Next Generation, season one. When the Ferengi were introduced, they were slated to be the reoccuring enemy of the Federation instead of the Klingons. The results were so bad, they became the butt of jokes for viewers everywhere. For this reason largely, this costume gets little respect.

Throughout Star Trek, we see Ferengi military, doctors, businessmen, and marauders. This is the earliest known Ferengi military uniform shown in the entire Star Trek universe.

This style costume was seen in such episodes as 'The Last Outpost' and 'The Battle'. Perhaps in an attempt to reinvent the Ferengi, these are the only times this version was seen, as they were changed from season 2 and on.

Six of these Ferengi costumes were made, and mine was used in 'The Last Outpost' as the boots had a lot of sand in them when I received it. This particular one was worn by veteran stuntman Richard 'Dick' Hancock...'D. Hancock' as identified by the inside tag. Sadly, this costume is missing it's fur vest and belt. However, mine is the only one that has the ultra rare and unique headwrap.

Deep Space Nine: Grand Nagus Zek

The Grand Nagus is the head of all things financial on Ferenginar. Accordingly, his wardrobe left nothing to spare. Grand Nagus Zek had four different outfits in just 7 episodes that he appeared. They have to be some of the finest examples of costuming in the whole of Star Trek. This version of his costume was first seen in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Prophet Motive' then lastly in 'Ferengi Love Songs'.

This particular costume is the stunt version worn by Dennis Madalone and was used only once in Deep Space Nine. It is seen in the episode 'Prophet Motive', where Quark has a vision from the Prophets and sees Zek jump from the upper level of the Promenade.

It's original jumpsuit was used for another Ferengi costume (I know which one), so I don't have it. With the advantage of owning so many Ferengi costumes, I was able to examine, pattern, and fabricate a darker velvet jumper for it. It came out very well for my first attempt. Also, the stunt costume was devoid of any metal detailing so there was nothing to harm the stuntman. It is virtually impossible to locate the exact type of metal greeblies, as I have tried. I have attached some approximations in an attempt to make it more presentable.

In 2009, I went to the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention and entered the costume contest wearing this costume. I had a fun time and tied for third place.

Deep Space Nine: Grand Nagus Zek

Grand Nagus Zek appeared in just 7 episodes, beginning with the Deep Space Nine episode 'The Nagus' and ending in 'The Dogs Of War'. His corrupt business practices and chauvenistic view of women were contrary to the staff of DS9, but critical to his enormous charm.

Wallace Shawn's magical portrayal of Zek made him a fan favorite. It is a known fact that he did not like to wear these facial appliances, so he averaged one episode per season. For this fact, I am lucky to have these unused hand and facial prostetics in my collection.

Deep Space Nine: Grand Nagus Staff

The Grand Nagus carries with him a staff that is traditional for an individual to kiss the head of after receiving advice from the Ferengi leader. The Grand Nagus possesses the ability to appoint a Grand Proxy to act in matters in which he is unwilling or unable, and he might also travel with the cane as proof of authority given from the Grand Nagus. The staff can be seen in several Deep Space Nine episodes, such as 'Rules of Accuisition', 'Profit and Lace', and Voyager 'False Profits'. There were many staffs made during the the production of the show (perhaps as many as 15), and this is one of them.

I realize this is not a costume, but I feel it is an important part of the Grand Nagus character and costume, so I have included it here.

Deep Space Nine: Nilva

'Nilva' was a Ferengi Commerce Authority commissioner and the chairman of the Slug-o-Cola company. Portrayed by the late Henry Gibson, it is featured in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Profit and Lace'. Nilva was the only Ferengi who agreed to travel to Deep Space Nine to hear 'Ishka' talking about the benefits of allowing the unheard of scenario of a Ferengi female making profit.

This is one of my most prized Ferengi costumes as it is incredibly detailed and elaborate. I can hardly describe it's beauty. You would have to see it to fully know how awesome it is. I am blessed to own it.

As a sidenote, I was contacted by GQ magazine in October 2009 to be in a photo shoot as a Ferengi with Star Trek's new Captain Kirk, Chris Pine in the December 2009 issue. They needed an actor and genuine costumes right away. Would I like to do it? I live near the west coast and the moment I said 'yes', GQ booked and paid travel and hotel arrangements. Barely four hours later I was boarding a plane to New York! Meeting Chris was great, and we had several laughs during the shoot. Here are a few 'behind the scenes' photos of what became a fantastic two page photo.

Deep Space Nine: Quark

Oh, is this one sweet. This Quark costume is unique in that we get to see it's fabrication by Garak in the season 4 Deep Space Nine episode 'For The Cause'. It is showcased very well in a total of 21 episodes such as 'The Magnificent Ferengi' and 'Business As Usual'.

This Ferengi costume may be one of Quark's most recognised as it is seen very frequently from season 4 through 7, including the series finale 'What You Leave Behind' In fact, the final time we see Quark, he is wearing this costume. Quark wears it with either a brown or maroon jumpsuit, with both versions displayed here. It is absolutely beautiful in person and it is among my favorite Ferengi costumes.

In 'For The Cause', it was shown on screen as a work in progress as many of the accents were not yet applied, and it had changed a bit from that point, as Quark had mentioned what he didn't like about it in that very episode. It no longer has
the cuffs, and the collar is now a narrower and different one than in that episode.

When the Star Trek Experience was retired in 2008, I felt it appropriate to wear this particular costume at the closing (I mean, it's Quarks, right?). This shot was taken after it closed for the last time .

Fun fact: When this costume was discovered, my friend Dana and I both wanted it really bad, but neither wanted to let the other one have it. So with my good friend Jim (see Niner's Paradise)as the moderator, we all agreed that Dana and I would flip a coin for the right to purchase it. Clearly, I won and I treat it like the prize that it is. I want to thank Dana for being a such a good sport.

Deep Space Nine: Quark

This Quark costume is first seen in the Deep Space Nine season 5 episode 'The Ascent' where Quark and Odo have crashed on a Type L planet and struggle with the planet, and each other, for survival. This episode showcases Quark at his best, and even Armin Shimmerman says this is one of his best episodes. Both men survive and this costume is used through to season 7, including the final episode.

This costume is used in 10 episodes and originally starts out with a blue jumpsuit, but later employs a maroon one, which I own. The fabrics and detail in this Ferengi costume are superb.

No stunt version exists for this costume, so accordingly, the internal tags show this to be the hero costume worn by Armin Shimmerman. There were a couple of these ferengi costumes made for 'The Ascent': the hero and a distressed version. The 'distressed' version was sold on Ebay before I knew about it, and New Ferenginar would love for it to come home.

As a footnote, I wore this costume to the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention in 2009. While walking around the vendor's area, I spotted Rene Auberjonois and said 'Hi'. He then told me to turn around, and guess who was behind me? Yep, Armin Shimmerman. He and Rene were due onstage and headed for the stage door, but Armin took a moment to talk and take a couple of photos with me. As he left, other people tried to stop him for pics and autographs, but he declined as he clearly needed to go. Armin did not have to stop for me, but he did and that makes him every bit the awesome guy you think he is. Armin, you have a fan for life!

Deep Space Nine: Broik

Broik can be seen often throughout the entire series, portrayed by David Levinson. However, this Ferengi costume is only briefly seen in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Bar Association'. At this point in the series, he still had not uttered one word on screen. While it may not be one of the flashiest of Ferengi costumes, I am glad it is in my collection.

Upon closer inspection of this costume, It seems that the base shirt is likely a modified off the rack shirt, with the scraps used for the headwrap. The vest is custom made, and I have seen the same fabric used in another Star Trek costume. I do not have the jumpsuit for this costume, and I suspect it was used from another Ferengi costume as seems to have been a common cost cutting practice.

This costume did make one further, albeit minor, appearance in the season 4 episode 'Broken Link'.

Deep Space Nine: Gral and Lonzo

This Ferengi costume was used to portray two different characters in this series: 'Gral' was a Ferengi businessman who traveled to Deep Space 9 in the episode 'The Nagus' so he could hear the Grand Nagus Zek announce his successor. Even though he initially opposed the selection of Quark as the new Grand Nagus, he offered up his services to Quark as his personal bodyguard in exchange for premium opportunities in the Gamma Quadrant. What he offered as 'protection', was intended as a threat. 'Lonzo' was a card shark whom got played by Odo as 'Curzon Dax' in the episode 'Facets'. Gral was portrayed by Lee Arenberg, but in a highly odd contradiction to practice, there are no tags in any piece of the costume to denote this. However, every piece does have the name Mark Barrett, which would suggest that Lonzo was portrayed by him. This costume also makes several guest appearances in DS9. It can be seen briefly in the episode 'Family Business' and was also seen hanging in Garak's shop in 'Profit And Loss'. Lastly, we see it draped over Quark's sofa in 'Prophet Motive'

Deep Space Nine: Nava

This Ferengi costume was featured in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode 'The Nagus'; wherein Nava is a Ferengi businessman that is invited to a conference held by Grand Nagus Zek aboard Deep Space Nine. During the course of the episode, Zek supposedly dies and Quark becomes the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance, until Zek's full plan is revealed.

Barry Gordon portrayed Nava, and the inside tags verify this. This costume was used only in this episode and there are no other names inside on any part, so no part of this costume was used for any other Ferengi costumes. This costume is of particular interest to me, as the cropped jacket has a unique collar and long band down the center.

Deep Space Nine: Gaila's Boots

Gaila was Quark's cousin, and in true Ferengi fashion, used every opportunity to his benefit. The first time we meet Gaila is in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Business As Usual'. In it, Gaila introduces Quark to the profitable world of weapons dealing as his likely successor. Trouble ensues, and Quark escapes the situation intact while Gaila's future is uncertain.

The next time we see Gaila is in the Deep Space Nine episode 'The Magnificent Ferengi'. Quark pays Gaila's debts and gets him out of prison (see the boots?) in exchange for his help in rescuing Quark and Rom's Mother from the Vorta.

Gaila was portrayed by Josh Pais, and his boots have his name taped to the insides. I don't own the Gaila costume...just his boots, but I do know the owner personally. The last time we met, he said he already has Gaila's boots with his costume, but we recently discovered that he doesn't. At some point one of us will complete the costume....one day.

EDIT: Aug 2011 The owner of Gaila and I made a deal where his costume is now reunited with the boots. I still want the costume, but that will come later.

The Next Generation: Dr. Reyga

This Ferengi costume can be seen in the 'Star Trek The Next Generation' episode 'Suspicions'. Dr. Reyga is a Ferengi scientist whom has developed a new metaphasic shield technology. Other peer scientists are invited aboard the Enterprise to view a demonstration, but the test seems to be a failure. In the course of the episode, Dr. Reyga suspiciously dies and Dr. Crusher is compelled to sort out the entire situation.

In an attempt to incrementally improve the Ferengi image, the writers gave them a scientist. Peter Slutsker portrayed Dr. Reyga, and all components of this costume have tags with his name and no others. This is the first time we see a Ferengi civilian costume, as all prior Ferengi were in military uniform. One of the unique features of this costume is the taper of the sleeves accomplished by a zipper from the forearm to the cuff.

Deep Space Nine: Civilian Waiter

This Ferengi costume is a bit hard to spot in the season 4 Deep Space Nine episode 'Bar Association', but it is there. Even though it may not one of the more sophisticated Ferengi costumes, I am lucky to have the complete costume in my collection.

The late Bernie Bielawski portrayed this Ferengi, and his name is on the inside tags. The shirt is custom made for this episode, while the jumpsuit and vest used for this episode came from a different Ferengi costume used earlier in the series...a common practice employed for a number for the Ferengi in this episode.

Deep Space Nine: Ferengi Rank Collar

This piece of neckwear was originally used in The Star Trek The Next Generation episode 'The Vengeance Factor'. It is likely that one of the Acamarian bodyguards or handmaidens wore this, as it does not match the one that the lead character, Yuta, wore.

This exact one reappears in the Deep Space Nine episode 'Q less' as a Rank Collar for one of the Ferengi bidding at Quarks auction.

Deep Space Nine: Civilian Waiter

This Ferengi costume was seen (or barely seen, rather) in two Deep Space Nine episodes. The first being 'Bar Association' where the Ferengi employed in Quarks bar formed a union of sorts to get better wages and treatment. In 'A Time To Stand', he is seen walking by Weyoun and Jake as a background character. Ironically, even though he was in two episodes, this unnamed Ferengi seemed to hide behind other characters, so the screencaps shown below are the best to be found of him. Kevin Brown portrayed this Ferengi, but had no lines. This costume is the obvious result of the episode needing Ferengi extras for the shoot. The base shirt is a modified off the rack shirt, and I suspect the vest is as well. The jumpsuit is the same one used for Gral/Lonzo and has many internal tags, each with a different name including Kevin's, thus this costume is complete.

Deep Space Nine: Brunt

Brunt was a Ferengi liquidator for the Ferengi Commerce Authority and was featured in 8 Deep Space Nine episodes, including 'Family Business' and 'Body Parts'. Truly 'The IRS guy from hell', he made every attempt to ruin Quark at any opportunity. Veteran Trek actor Jeffry Combs portrayed Brunt. It seems there were two versions of this costume made (see below). This particular costume is missing it's amazing coat and latinum bar necklace as the only complete version of this costume was sold at the Christies auction in 2006. All of the internal tags say Jeffery Combs. I also own the stunt version of this costume which was worn by George Colucci. The only differences between the two versions of Brunt's costume are in the jumpsuit and vest, as the remaining components were shared between them. Version 1 was used in seasons 1-5, as seen below. I own version 2, which was used in season 6-7 as seen here in 'The Magnificent Ferengi' It saw one final use in 'The Dogs Of War' as it was the final time we see Brunt.

At a 2011 convention, I was talking with Armin Shimmerman when Jeffery Combs walks up and inserts himself in our chat...awesome! I had never met him before, so to meet him in such a casual way was fantastic. He was great and spent a fair amount of time talking Shakespeare and DS9 with us. Thanks Jeffery!

Deep Space Nine: Nog

Nog is the first Ferengi to join Starfleet. He worked for his uncle Quark in his bar, until deciding to pursue a life better than that of Rom, his father. This is a standard Starfleet duty uniform and we first see Nog wearing it season 6 'Sacrifice Of Angels'. He continues to be seen wearing it in many Deep Space Nine episodes up to and including the finale 'What You Leave Behind'.

Because of Aron Eisenberg's size, his stunt double was a female. Nancy Thurston was Aron's stunt double, and this is her Ferengi stunt costume. I realize this is not a typical Ferengi costume, and this uniform itself isn't unique, but when coupled with the matching Ferengi headwrap, it is all the more special.

Star Trek Voyager: Kol

This Ferengi costume was seen in the Voyager episode 'False Profits'. This episode effectively completes a story arc between it and it's origin from the Star Trek The Next Generation episode 'The Price'. In the first part of their story, Kol and Dr. Arridor were to represent the Ferengi Alliance in the negotiations to purchase the Barzan Wormhole. While verifying the wormhole's terminus, Kol and Arridor found it to be unstable, but not before becoming unexpectedly trapped at the other end in the Delta Quadrant. Star Trek Voyager picks up the story where Voyager encounters Kol and Arridor in the Delta Quadrant on Takar II. The two Ferengi convinced the provincial population that they were the 'Great Sages' from that planets' scriptures. Ultimately they were driven off the planet with a fate unknown. However, the fate of Kol's costume is. This is the hero costume worn by Leslie Jordan. Clearly this is one of those costumes where the fabricators spared no expense in cost or imagination. This costume is very complete and fantastic in person. I wore this to the Las Vegas Star Trek convention in 2008. I had a great time and among my activities, went to The Star Trek Experience. Once there, I had my pic taken with the other two Ferengi on duty. They indulged me in conversation and photo ops, with a good time had by all. I'm not an actor of any sort, but for this moment, I felt a little closer to being a part of Star Trek, and not just a fan.

Deep Space Nine and Voyager: Krax and Gegis

This Ferengi costume was used twice as the characters Krax and Gegis. The first time was in the Deep Space 9 episode 'The Nagus'. Krax is the son of Grand Nagus Zek and is looking to become the next Nagus. Zek, however, has other plans. The second time we see this costume is in the Voyager episode 'Inside Man'. Gegis is part of a Ferengi plan to steal some nanoprobes from 7 of 9.

Krax was portrayed by Lou Wagner and Gegis was portrayed by Frank Corsentino, and there are tags inside all components to verify this. There is one other name in the jumpsuit alone that reads Rob Steiner. Contrary to the Memory Alpha website, there is no evidence Rob Steiner wore any other component of this costume. It was not uncommon for two different Ferengi costumes to share one jumpsuit, and I suspect there is a different top half of a costume somewhere that has his name on the inside tags. This costume is very small and I had to mount this one on a female mannequin to display it.

Deep Space Nine: Head Waiter

The backbone of Quark's bar is the Waiter. There were several styles of waiter costume. This Ferengi costume can be seen in many episodes of Deep Space Nine, such as 'The Maquis'. Due to the uncommon coat style and unique sleeve stripes, this costume is likely worn by a more senior Waiter.

This particular costume was worn by veteran Ferengi actor Ken Ziff. In fact, there's 'ol Ken playing tongo with Broik in the Season 2 episode 'Rules Of Acquisition'. It's hard to miss his smile.

Deep Space Nine: Broik

Among all of Quark's employees, the waiter is on the bottom rung. However, it seems Quark relies on Broik more than other the other Ferengi waiters. Ferengi costumes such as this one can be seen in most episodes of Deep Space Nine, such as 'The Emissary' and 'Favor The Bold'.

David Levinson portrayed Broik an impressive 68 times, and even though virtually never spoke, he was commonly seen and referred to. This particular Ferengi waiter costume is likely an early one as it is a bit worn from use, and a friend of mine also owns an identical Broik that is in markedly better condition.

Deep Space Nine: Civilian Waiter

This Ferengi costume was worn by an unnamed character in the Deep Space Nine episodes 'Body Parts' and 'Bar Association'. In 'Body Parts', he is merely a background Ferengi. In 'Bar Association', He is among other Ferengi employed by 'Quark' that is dissatisfied with his working conditions. This Ferengi was portrayed by actor Vincent Carerra. You also may have noticed that the fabric used in the coat is the same fabric used in the 'Cousin Gaila' Ferengi costume (which I don't own). The costume is currently missing its vest and headwrap.

Deep Space Nine: Quark

This Quark costume was seen in two episodes of Deep Space Nine: 'Let He Who Is Without Sin...' and 'The Jem'Hadar'. In 'Let He Who Without Sin...', several members from DS9 travel to Risa for some shore leave. However, a group called the 'New Essentialists' have different ideas about Risan society.

In 'The Jem'Hadar', Sisko and Quark are captured by Jem'Hadar soldiers while studying a planet in the gamma quadrant. Early in the episode, Quark's right arm is ignited by the campfire.

Two of these Ferengi costumes were made. My very good friend Jim has the other one. Both of ours have burned right arms. I got 5 extra shirts with mine, and they all have burned sleves as well. This particular costume has Armin Shimmerman shirts and stunt jumpsuit and vest elements.

I wore this costume to the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention 2008. I was suprised that it went over well enough for a friend and I to be pictured in the print version of Las Vegas Weekly the next week.

Ferengi That Almost Was

I have seen a couple of Ferengi costume pieces that never made it to filming. I have mixed feelings on this one.

The undershirt is excellent and fabricated in true Ferengi style. It has a small amount of makeup residue on the collar indicating possible screen use that I have yet to find, or rejected just prior to filming. It has a DS9 tag inside with 'A Viner'. Of course, this is veteran Ferengi actor Alan Viner proving it's Ferengi intent.

The coat is another story...to put it plainly, it's ugly. With no Star Trek tag of any kind the coat is likely to be a regular off the rack coat that has been cropped Ferengi style. It even has the tag from the original manufacturer inside.

I purchased both items together, and there is not much to suggest that they were ever intended to be together. However, I contend that they were together and were intended to be used for the DS9 episode 'Bar Association' as several of those Ferengi wore modified of the rack clothes. It must not have fit the motif....and in some small way, I am greatful.

I love these Ferengi costumes. They are more than the sum of different fancy and expensive jacquard fabrics assembled in the most unusual and yet amazing combinations. They are a piece of historic sci-fi television. To me, they are an example of fine art and superior craftsmanship. Much like one would display a painting or sculpture in their house for enjoyment, I, too, proudly display my Ferengi on mannequins throughout my house. It never gets old.

Tragically, some of the Ferengi costumes made for the various Star Trek shows will never see a mannequin, or the eternal care and love of a collector. In a twist of irony, they have been cut up into little squares and circles....for profit.

This Quark costume was seen on Deep Space Nine from seasons 4-7. There were several made, at least 6 shirts and 3 pants. Here are two of them, and for the purpose of discussion, I am going to call these two primary and secondary. Here they are:

I know they look like different colors in the two photos, but they are the same. The primary photo was filmed outdoors, and the secondary was filmed on the darker, stage light DS9 set. When looking at the photo in the Christie's catalog, it is clear that the shirt in the primary photo was sold with the rest of the costume at the 2006 Christie's Star Trek auction. The shirt in the secondary photo was 'damaged' for an on screen effect.

And now, it has been permanently damaged to extinction. Here's The autopsy photo:

I can't tell you if the photo shown on the card is the actual cut up shirt, as there were about 6 fabricated for this costume.

In the Star Trek The Next Generation episode 'The Price', DaiMon Goss conspires with Devinoni Ral to purchase the Barzan Wormhole from the Chrysalian delegation before the Federation is able to. DaiMon Goss was in just one episode. I think we now know why.

Grand Nagus Zek may be getting sleepy to put his pajamas on, but his fans never get tired of him. In the DS9 episode 'Prophet Motive', Zek looks into a Bajoran orb and gets a visit from The Prophets. From that point forward, he is changed from chauvenistic and greedy to charitable and generous. Quark and Rom figure it out and get The Prophets to restore Zek to normal.

Sadly, His pajamas will never be restored to normal. Here they are today:
